VARY YOUR APPROACH, RIG 1 - by Dan Chart
I enjoyed reading Colin’s article about rigs last month and like a few others you can see he has total confidence in his approach which is an absolute must if you are to crack your chosen water.
You always know when you are on to a winner when you extract the hook from the fish’s mouth from the centre of the bottom lip. This is how I gauge if my rigs are working as if I found the hook on the side, top or anywhere else of the fishes mouth, invariably I will change the rig as I always think ‘I was lucky to hook that!’. I know the bait is working, so that’s the first obstacle crossed so now I just need to do some fine tweaking like shortening/lengthening the hair.
There are a few rigs that I use for most of my everyday fishing, they are rigs that I have extreme confidence in and over the next few months I will go through the situations when I deploy their uses:
Rig 1 - The Chod Rig
‘Not you as well’ I can hear you say but yes, I’m afraid so! My friends and I swear by them but it has to be tied up spot on if you are to get the most out of it. I like my boom section to be extremely rigid so I like to use the Gardner 25lb Tripwire. This helps keep the curve in the rig so much more and prevents the fish from flattening it when feeding in the area as sometimes they sit it on it, believe me they do this! I like to have as much travel as possible along the leadcore by positioning the top bead as high as possible. You can adjust this depending on the bottom you are fishing.
Finally, but most importantly, I tie my lead on with light nylon so it comes free on the fight with the fish. I rarely fish this rig with particles as you want the fish to be picking up baits rather than hovering.
Don't forget to log on for next months rig, good luck and tight lines!
