January 2011 - Service your kit for spring

Well at last the thaw came and I couldn’t wait to get the rods out again
after a long break. Now my first thoughts was the Car Park, but as I only
had a single night I opted for a night on Sutton's Lake 3. Although nothing
happened it was nice to be out again and I had the lake to myself, but
maybe I was just a little bit to eager.

A LONG AWAITED RETURN TO THE CAR PARK

After the blank on Sutton's Lake 3, I was dying to get back up The Car Park.
On the drive up to the lake all the normal things were going through my
mind, as where to fish.

I decided to pop in to Yaetley Angling to see Martin King and find out if anyone had been up there since it had thawed. After speaking to Martin and having a brew with him in the shop, I found out that one fella had been on the lake for a 48 hour session and he had fished in the Curly and put out a gallon of maggots. Now I thought if no one was in the Curly that I might as well start there with all them maggots sitting out there.

As I pulled in to the car park their was no other cars there. I pushed all my kit up to the Curly and got set up, after doing quite a bit of time in that swim I knew a couple of spots to fish too. Now one of the spots is quite short and I had a feeling this could be where the maggots had been put in, so I positioned a bait straight on to it.

I opted to fish a pop up SS Range Cork Ball on the little gravel spot, the other rod was fished at the back of another gravel spot. I put out about half a dozen SS Range 14 mm boilies round both rods and then sat back and made myself a brew, thinking to myself that it was good to be back on the CP.

Just on dark I was standing by the rod when the left hand rod gave to bleeps and I noticed that the bobbin had pulled up tight. As I picked up the rod and leant in to it the fish started to kite left of the swim, now at this point I can tell you my legs went to pieces but after a few minutes I could then tell it wasn’t a carp. My thoughts were right when I slipped the net under a tench but I must admit I was buzzing that the spot was right and the bait was right and my little pop up rig was bang on as the tench was nicely hooked in the centre of the mouth about an inch back.

I tied on a new pop up and got the rod back out on the spot, nothing else happened that night but at 11 o’clock the next morning the same rod was away again and it turned out to be another tench, I was starting to get that feeling that if the tench were having it then the old carp might be out there with them, having a bit of grub. The rod was done again and I sat there watching for signs of bubbling.

As the day went on Mad Martin popped in and had a brew and a chat and it was good to see him. I was telling him what had happened so far this session. Martin always gets you buzzing when he pops in for a chat. Well it was about 8 o’clock
that night when I received another bite on the left hand rod and yet again it was another tench, but I just kept feeling that the next bite could be a carp.

The rod yet again was put back out on the same spot, nothing else happened that night but I sat up to midnight and definitely saw two carp show. I made a mental note of these two areas for my next trip. I ended up getting in to the bag and crashed out for the night.

The next morning I had an absolute flyer and thought this was it, as it was taking line from the spoil, I couldn’t believe it when another tench rolled over the net. Now I don’t mind catching tench and they were pretty good sized ones because you know everything is right with your spots, rigs and bait, but I had to pack up and I just new it was going to do a carp bite. Well I finally got the call Wednesday to say matey followed me in and had a 29lb common, I was totally gutted but that’s fishing for you.

CARPOLOGY & LITTLE H

The following weekend I couldn’t return to the Car Park due to having to do a hardware feature for Carpology on Little H. Although we didn’t catch anything due to it being bloody freezing, we did have a good laugh and it was good to catch up with Keith Sykes, Peter Bond, Dave Sykes and Bidders and the rest of the Carpology hardware team.

Well that’s it for this month all the best for February and I hope you catch a whacker.

Cheers and tight lines...
