JUNE 2010 - Preparation is the key
For some people the season is just starting and everyone is excited to get down their water as much as possible, so it can, at times, be frustrating to get that swim you wanted. For others where the fisheries remain open, the only thing that is different is fish are responding more to larger quantities of bait and visiting the edges more as temperatures boom.
If like myself, your water has been closed for a couple of months you’ll find the fish have dropped their guard and will happily take whatever is being offered to them due to no lines being in the water. However, as soon as the gates open and every swim is taken by budding anglers, they’ve suddenly remembered to stop what they were doing and get very finicky with their eating approach.
If your water allows it then it is important to get the fish going on your chosen food bait for the coming season during the close season months. Even if your water remains open all year round getting your food bait in over April and May can pay dividends come the summer. The hard work is getting the fish on it if you are still angling, as this is a far easier when no lines are in the water.
My water doesn’t allow baiting in the close season so I can only apply my food bait from the off which is June 1st. So at this time I will use more boilies than at any other time during the season.
But if I do it right and get them on it over June I find it a lot easier to get a result during the months of July and August fishing with small amounts of bait when they tend not to feed so hard.
Every year you see someone really have it off and out-fish many other good anglers. This is because that angler got his preparation spot on and the fish can’t resist his bait.
Cheers & Tight Lines
