Spring Tip - Resist the Urge!

Well thank god that is over; the winter that is! It caught everyone by surprise, including the fish, when that first hard frost hit us early November. From then on the cold weather was relentless and ruined most anglers, including myself, any chances of getting a winter campaign going. I did manage to see a couple of fish early January which kept me wanting to get out but I never got a sniff despite trying my hardest.

But all that pain is over now and we can now start thinking about bagging a few!

This year I've decided to have a go on the new Scattered Baits Aquatix Anchovy that, I have to say, looks and smells superb! Now, I know I'd be expected to say that being a consultant for Scattered Baits, but I know the baits history and you have to see it to acknowledge just how good it really is. I had a great year last year on the Garlic and Black Pepper but I couldn't resist trying the new bait.

This being a tips and tactics section, I wanted to get across how important it is for you to have your plan formulated with regards to what bait you plan to use for this forthcoming season. Ensure you choose a high quality food source like the Scattered Baits range. This has been documented previously on this website (See 'March Tips' or 'February Tips') so I wont go over as to reasons why, but applying it from now will pay dividends for the season ahead.

However, as the title suggests, you need to be careful with your bait application by not 'over doing it'. Although the weather is significantly warmer to that of late and fish are topping/crashing that doesn't mean they 'are having it!'. Granted, they are picking up baits as they look to replenish themselves but apply smaller amounts to achieve that bite on your sessions during this month. It wont be long before you can throw this advise out the window as the water temperature rises to a normal state.

John and I had a great weekend on a social and we managed to bag a few but these fish were still likes blocks of ice whilst we were holding them in our t-shirts! But i'll leave him to tell you all about that in his diary piece.

It was one of the most savage winters we had for a long time so caution must be applied until that water temperature booms up. But above all, if you can, get out there because this is the best time of the year for the fish of your dreams!

Cheers & Tight Lines
